Hey reader,
The Pre-Season Fitness Myth That Coaches Have Which is Holding Athletes Back
"Fitness? Yeah, we do that between November and March. Then it’s all about the matches."
A cricket coach said this to me recently, and honestly—it’s not uncommon. But let’s unpack why this is a myth still!
Too many coaches still treat S&C and physical development as a pre-season-only task across sports. It’s like cramming for an exam and then never revising again during the year.
But here’s the truth:
🚫 “Fitness is just for pre-season”
🧠 If that’s your mindset, you’re missing out on helping players maintain performance, stay injury-free, and recover across the season. Pre-season lays the foundation—but what keeps athletes improving is what you do week to week during the year. Especially in Youth Athletes where you need to think of the long term picture and if they miss out on 6-7 months of no athletic development work, they will move backwards.
🔁 Pre-season builds it. In-season maintains it. Year-round effort compounds it.
🚫 “I don’t have time for physical training during the season”
🧠 You don’t need 30-minute gym blocks or runs. You need microdoses—short, focused work within warm-ups, small-sided games, and movement-based drills that are already part of your sessions.
✅ What this looks like in cricket as an example:
Fast bowlers: low-dose posterior chain work + landing drills in warm-ups. Also, speed mechanics and core stability work drip fed.
Fielders: agility & reactive work into skills-based stations.
Batters: trunk control and power using a med ball prior to nets.
🧠 What happens if you skip in-season training?
Players lose their speed and power.
Recovery takes longer.
Injuries increase.
And by the time next pre-season rolls around? You're back to square one.
Let’s stop this cycle.
You don’t need to add more sessions—just integrate smarter movement work into what you’re already doing. Great coaches aren’t waiting until the off season—they’re developing better athletes year-round.
