Things to develop your coaching and have a greater impact on your athletes. You define what your “elite” is!
By Isaac Leung, Athletic Skills
Hey reader,
Most coaches know their athletes need to be faster, more agile, and better movers—but fitting athletic development into packed training sessions with minimal time can feel impossible.
The good news? You don’t need extra time to build speed, agility, and movement quality.
The best coaches integrate movement into the sessions they’re already running, without taking away from tactical or technical work. In this newsletter, I’ll show you how to make every session a movement session—without adding more drills or losing time.
How to Coach Movement, Even When You’re Coaching Technique
One of the biggest challenges for sports coaches? Finding time to develop speed, agility, and movement skills while focusing on tactics and technical work.
You know your athletes need to be faster, stronger, and more agile, but between team drills, match prep, and game strategy, movement training often gets pushed aside.
But here’s the good news: You don’t need extra time to develop movement skills.
Great coaches integrate movement into the sessions they’re already running—without taking away from tactical or technical coaching. Here’s how:
1️⃣ Use Small-Sided Games to Develop Speed & Agility
Athletes don’t just need straight-line speed—they need to be quick, reactive, and explosive in game situations. You can train these qualities without adding extra drills.
✅ How?
Reduce space to force quicker decision-making and sharper acceleration.
Add chase-based elements to encourage explosive first steps.
Change scoring rules to reward fast transitions or defensive recoveries.
🏆 Why it works: These games replicate real match demands, improving movement, game intelligence, and tactical awareness at the same time.
2️⃣ Use Warm-Ups to Build Athleticism
Most warm-ups are wasted time—jogging, static stretching, or generic drills that don’t transfer to the game. Instead, use warm-ups to build movement quality.
✅ How?
Follow my warm up framework where I show you how to develop a warm up in 15 mins or less that is fun, effective and engaging! Click here to watch a short video!
🏆 Why it works: You’re priming the body for high-intensity work while building speed, agility, and coordination—without needing extra time.
3️⃣ Coach Movement Within Tactical Drills
You don’t need separate drills for movement—just coach it within your existing tactical sessions.
✅ How?
Defensive drills: Cue foot positioning, balance, and first-step explosiveness.
Attacking play: Reinforce acceleration, deceleration, and efficient turning.
Quick, clear feedback—correct movement without slowing the session down.
🏆 Why it works: Players develop better movement habits and messaging transfers across all parts of training from physical to technical.
The Bottom Line
If you’ve ever thought, “I don’t have time for movement training,” you’re thinking about it the wrong way.
You don’t need to add more drills—you just need to coach movement within what you’re already doing.
